Kevin Stewart, the RCP’s clinical director of the Clinical Effectiveness and Evaluation Unit, along with other members of the RCP’s Care Quality Improvement Department recently authored an article in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) on the topic of care quality throughout the week.
The letter focused on the variations in the quality of care in hospitals and stated: 'The "weekend effect" is an oversimplification.' Stewart added:
Attempting to address it [the 'weekend effect'] is a distraction because hospital mortality is not a good measure of quality of care and weekends are not the only times when quality is compromised by the way in which services are organised.
