Physicians often contribute their time to work for the wider benefit of the NHS. However, this often goes unrecognised and with increased pressures it is increasingly difficult for many hospitals to allow for such time off work to contribute in this way. As a result the four chief medical officers and the General Medical Council (GMC) have sent a letter to every trust that supports such activity.
