Consultation on Revitalising medicine

We would like to hear your views on whether the recommendations made are appropriate, and how useful you think they would be in improving motivation and satisfaction in the acute setting.

Background

In 2013, we published The medical registrar: Empowering the unsung heroes of patient care which looked at issues faced by higher specialty trainees practising general medicine in the acute setting. Revitalising medicine utilises these findings as well as other published literature, organisational psychology theory and previously unpublished data from RCP surveys to map out potential causes of dissatisfaction in the acute setting. Further, it suggests ways in which change can be made, both through local grassroots efforts as well as through the higher levels of medical management.

Domains

The causes for potential dissatisfaction have been organised into 12 domains as follows:

Workplace environment

  • Domain 1: Work
  • Domain 2: Physical environment
  • Domain 3: Interpersonal relations
  • Domain 4: Hospital administration and policies
  • Domain 5: Organisational leadership

Personal factors

  • Domain 6: Personal characteristics
  • Domain 7: Perception of reward system
  • Domain 8: Pastoral support
  • Domain 9: Career
  • Domain 10: Home circumstances
  • Domain 11: Education and training

Patient factors

  • Domain 12: Patient safety
