The Northern Health Science Alliance (NHSA) was established in 2011 and acts as a front door to the north of England’s health research system, working for a healthier, wealthier region across its population of 16 million people.
It has 24 constituent organisations, which include 10 research-intensive universities, 10 research-active NHS trusts and four Academic Health Science Networks. The alliance has been able to raise the profile of life sciences in the north of England, attracting research funding from traditional and non-traditional sources, and contributing to better patient outcomes. An important focus for the NHSA is on tackling health inequalities and in 2018 it published Health for Wealth, demonstrating the link between poor health in the north of England and lower productivity and economic growth.
